CHESAPEAKE — Somebody made a mistake and woke up the Gallipolis Blue Devils at halftime.
The heavily-favored Blue Devils led the young upstart Chesapeake Panthers by just six points at halftime. But Gallipolis came out in the second half and outscored the Panthers 34-19 as they went on to post a 63-42 Ohio Valley Conference win on Friday.
Zach Loveday scored 22 points to lead Gallipolis (10-1, 5-1). Justin McClelland hit four 3-pointers and scored eight of his 14 points in the third quarter.
Chesapeake (4-7, 2-3) was led by Cole Mills with 14 points.
The 7-foot-1 Loveday scored six points in the first quarter and McClelland hit a pair of 3-pointers as Gallipolis took a 12-7 lead.
Mills scored nine points in the second quarter and Eli Archer had five points including a 3-pointer as the Panthers trailed just 29-23 at the half.
Loveday scored nine points and Cory Call had six of his eight points in the second quarter.
McClelland hit two more 3-pointers in his eight points in the third quarter, Loveday had six more and Caleb Henry scored all four of his points as Gallipolis scored 23 points and took a 52-32 lead.
Mills had five points including a 3-pointer as Chesapeake managed just nine points in the third quarter.
Both teams emptied their benches in the fourth quarter.
Chesapeake plays in the Coach Young Classic on Saturday at North Adams and hosts South Point on Tuesday. Gallipolis entertains Rock Hill on Tuesday.
