CHESAPEAKE — Douglas Shaffer pitched a really good game. He wasn’t too bad at the plate, either.
Shaffer threw a five-hit complete game and went 2-for-4 with two runs scored as the South Point Pointers scored three unearned runs in the seventh inning to beat the Chesapeake Panthers 5-2 on Tuesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
Shaffer struck out 12 and walked just one to get the win.
“Shaffer had good command with his fastball, curve and knuckleball. Hit the outside corner really well. He threw a nice game,” said Panthers’ coach Justin Davis.
“But I’m proud of the way our kids played and Martin pitched well, too.”
Bretton Martin pitched well in defeat. He gave up nine hits, struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Both pitchers gave up two earned runs.
Each team got a run in the first inning.
South Point (6-0, 3-0) got its run when Shaffer singled, stole second and scored on a hit by Travis Dillon.
The Panthers tied the game in the bottom of the first when Kelton Jones singled, stole second, took third on a passed ball and Josh Hanson had an RBI single.
The Pointers took a 2-1 lead in the fifth as Shaffer singled, stole second and Brody Blackwell singled for a run in the fifth.
Chesapeake (1-3, 0-2) tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Evan Burcham singled, moved up on a sacrifice by Josh Hanson and Tyler Eddy delivered a two-out double.
But in the seventh, Ben Walls singled and went to second on a throwing error. Drew Smith singled to put runners on the corners and then Smith stole second.
After a strikeout and pop out, Shaffer reached on an error as the go-ahead run scored. Blackwell singled for a run and then Dillon and Jonathan Henline walked to force in an insurance run.
Shaffer struck out the side in the bottom of the inning to secure the win.
Blackwell went 2-4 with two RBI and Walls was 2-3.
On Wednesday, Chesapeake plays a doubleheader at Portsmouth while South Point visits Fairland.
