ASHLAND — One of the anchor stores at the KYOVA Mall in Ashland will be disappearing, as the parent company Elder Beerman announced on Tuesday that it will be closing and liquidating all of its 31 stores.

The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc., which has owned the chain since 2003, said the closing will affect Elder Beerman, as well as the other branded stores owned by the company, including Bon-Ton and Carson’s.

The Elder Beerman store at KYOVA began as a Stone and Thomas location, but took on the Elder Beerman branding when the Wheeling-based chain, which operated in West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky, was acquired by the company in 1998.

Along with Kmart, Phar-Mor and Sears, it was one of the original anchor stores for the mall, all of which have since closed. The mall has seen some resurgence in recent years, with the addition of Rural King in the former Kmart building and the construction and opening of the Phoenix 10 movie theater.

An Elder Beerman store at the Huntington Mall closed in 2016.

The chain’s stores are expected to shut down in 10-12 weeks.
