May 1 event open to grads, community

Ohio University Southern will have a Career Expo and Grad Fair on Tuesday. The event at the Ironton campus is to help new graduates make the transition into the workplace smoother.

The event is open to OUS alumni and for the first time, people in the community.

It is free and allows job seekers a chance to network and interact with possible employers in one location. More than thirty employers seeking employees are registered to participate in the Career Expo.

Ashlie Bailey, an OUS retention specialist for the Southern Campus, said the Career Expo was created specifically with our students and community in mind as opportunity to help improve the lives of our students and community.

“It is important for job seekers to improve their skill sets and to have a good awareness of their strengths and weaknesses when approaching the job market,” she said.

Bailey said students, soon-to-be-graduates and alumni from a variety of career fields including education, criminal justice, nursing, social work, applied management, communications and other disciplines will participate. Other prospective employees are graduates in environmental technology, child development, electronic media, human services technology and law enforcement technology.

Nicole Pennington, dean of the Southern Campus, said Ohio Southern graduates are qualified for many in-demand jobs.

“We are proud of the capabilities of our students and alumni and are happy to showcase their talents as they prepare to enter the workforce,” she said.

In addition to being able to meet individually with employers, participants at the Career Expo can also learn more about services and resources from Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities, Ohio Means Jobs and Ohio Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation.

The event will take place from 1-5 p.m. on May 1, in the Mains Rotunda of the Riffe Center.
