GRAYSON, Ky. — Douglas Shaffer has pitched well all season. Monday was no different.
Shaffer stuck out four, walked one and gave up two earned runs along with six hits as he went the distance to lead the South Point Pointers to a 7-2 win over the East Carter Raiders.
“Douglas Shaffer pitched another fine game and our defense played very well,” said Pointers’ coach Larry Goodwin.
“East Carter had some good hitters in their lineup and challenge our defense by putting the ball in play. Offensively, we hit the ball well and we did a good job executing our offensive plays.”
South Point went up 3-0 in the first inning.
Drew Smith bunted for a hit, stole second and scored on Brody Blackwell’s single. Jonathon Henline singled and an error sent Blackwell to third.
Blackwell scored on a double steal and Ben Walls singled home Henline.
The Pointers added a run in the second when Shaffer walked, stole second and scored on Blackwell’s base hit.
The lead went to 6-0 in the fourth.
Smith doubled, Shaffer singled and then they pulled off a double steal as Smith scored. Henline then doubled home Shaffer.
East Carter got a run in the fifth on a singled by Lucas Young and a double by Caden McDavid.
The Pointers got the run back in the sixth when Darwin Runyon was hit by a pitch, Smith’s bunt was misplayed for an error, and Blackwell had an RBI single.
The Raiders scored in the sixth when Donovan Damron singled, Trey Scott waked and Young singled.
The Pointers had 12 hits with Blackwell 3-4 and three RBI. Smith and Henline were 2-4 with a double and Walls 2-4 with an RBI.
South Point (16-4, 10-4 OVC) plays Saturday against the winner of Meigs and Southeastern in the Division III sectional finals.
