Elberta Emmons

Elberta Louise Newman Curry-Moran Emmons, 86, of Kitts Hill, formerly of Ruffin, South Carolina, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2018, in the home of her sister, Doris “Sue” Taylor, and special friend, Teresa Brown, after an extended illness.
She was born in Rome, Ohio, on Feb. 11, 1932, the daughter of the late Harry Carlton Newman and Lola Belle (Lucas) Newman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Hatch Emmons; and by her husband, William Bernard Moran.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was also preceded in death by five brothers, Harry “Carl” Newman Jr., John Donald Newman, William Edward Newman, Kenneth Lee Newman and Franklin Parsons Newman; and also the father of her children and longtime friend, Everett Stanley Curry.
She is survived by three brothers, James “Bub” Irvin Newman, of Wheelersburg, Samuel Joseph Newman, of Kitts Hill, and Charles “Pete” Wetzel Newman, of Ironton; three sisters, Betty Jean Newman, of Wheelersburg, Daisy “Cricket” Mary Brammer, of Rock Camp, and Doris (Sue) Marie Taylor, of Kitts Hill; two sons, Randall Lee Curry (Michelle), of Fort Myers, Florida, and Bradley Lewayne Curry (Carol), of Caledonia; three grandchildren, Matthew Curry, Chad Curry and Benjamin Curry; four great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
She was a graduate of Rome High School. She continued her education at Rio Grande University, Marshall University and Ohio State University, graduating with a Master’s Degree in education. She retired from Lawrence County and Marion County school systems after 25 years of service and from Colleton County Schools in South Carolina after 40 years of service as a teacher and reading specialist supervisor.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Woodland Cemetery, Ironton, with Chaplain Duane Knittel officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heartland Hospice. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.schneiderhallfuneralhome.com.
