End-of-year awards given for reading, writing, spelling

ROME TOWNHIP — Teachers at Fairland West Elementary presented “End of Year Awards” to fourth and fifth grade students last week.

Reading Awards of a special trophy were presented by Gail Phillips, fourth grade teacher, to students who read at least 50 books, of at least 75 pages each, over the academic year.

Winners for the award were Harley Devaney, with 67 books; Emily Ferguson, 57 books; Emmy Brown, 54 books; Addyson Cornell, 58 books; Maddox Gue, 51 books; Ty Fletcher, 51 books; Alyssa Judge, 290 books; Raelynn Chapman, 70 books; Bella Weinsweig, 70 books; Braelyn Eaches, 50 books; Aden Reed, 222 books; Luke Ball, Robert Jenkins, Kennedy Persinger, 70 books; Cloe Moore, 64 books; Korin Evanich, 54 books; Harley Hankins, 53 books; Cliff Fransen, 90 books; Bailey Russell, 75 books; Addison Godby, 67 books; Steven Perego and Killian Ingles.

The student in the fourth grade who read the most was Molly Dunlap, at 466 books.

Fourth grade teacher Shawna Leep presented a special award to one of her students, Emily Ferguson. Emily won her classroom spelling bee, the Fairland West Elementary School spelling bee, and went on to take first place in the Lawrence County Schools Spelling Bee in December.

After taking an online test, Ferguson qualified to compete in the regional be at Ohio University in Athens on March 26. She competed against students in fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grade and Leep said Ferguson had to learn to spell more than 2,000 words through all of the competitions.

Fifth grade reading teacher Lisa Thompson presented trophies to students who read at least 50 books that were at least 100 pages long. The winners were Jordan Spencer, 50; Angela Li, 71; Summer White, 76; Nastasha Perego, 79; Madelynn Adkins, 83; Gabe Polcyn, 50; Annika Elam, 189; and Evan King, 391.

Mrs. Ashley Sullivan, fifth grade Language arts teacher, presented awards to three students for winning countywide writing contests. Isabella James and Isa Taliaferro both won awards for the Lawrence County Retired Teachers Association essay contest, and Madison Rummel won the “Top Dog” essay contest, sponsored annually by Jason Stephens and the Lawrence County Auditor’s Office.

Kira Dillon, fifth grade science teacher, presented awards to Alexis Chinn, Jayden Wilder and Katherine Swolsky for winning entries in the Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation Office Poster Contest.

“The hard working students of Fairland West make me feel proud of them,” Principal Teresa Johnson said. “These awards would not be possible without the support of loving and caring parents who make learning a priority in their homes. I am grateful for the continued support of the families in our community. I feel that Fairland is fortunate to have such talented teachers who work hard every day to educate our future citizens.”
