Smallest class in county

“We’re small, but we’re mighty,” joked Father David Huffman as the students and faculty lined up to graduate the 12 members of St. Joseph High School’s Class of 2018 on Friday night.

This was the 92nd class to graduate from the school.

“We have a great class,” he said. “They are all preparing to further their education in very diverse fields. Many of them are going locally to Ohio University Southern and Marshall University. Our school has prepared them physically, mentally and spiritually.”

Alyson Johnson was one of two Valedictorians.

“I’m a little nervous about my speech but I’m excited at the same time,” she said. “I’m thanking everyone for getting me to the spot I am now.”

As for the future, she is excited to be headed off to Waynesburg University in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, where she will play on the volleyball team and study athletic training.

“I am going to miss my friends and family, though,” she said.

Clay Willis is the other class Valedictorian.

“I’m a little anxious,” he said before commencement started. “I’m giving my speech tonight. I’ve worked hard on that. But, really, I am ready to wrap things up and start moving in the next direction and see all of the class’s work come to fruition.”

He said he was excited about moving on to college at Marshall University, where he will study biological sciences-pre-med, so he can go to medical school.

“I will definitely miss my sports career here, it’s tough to leave behind” Willis said. “But the kids here have a bright future.”

St. Joseph High School Principal Chris Monte said the Class of 2018 was a great class.

“Many of them started kindergarten and then went through all 12 years together,” he said. “It is a close-knit class and it always has been and I think they will remain close.”
