SOUTH WEBSTER — The Chesapeake Lady Panthers didn’t mind getting what they expected, but it was the unexpected that caused all the problems.

Chesapeake knew South Webster’s Kayla Cook would score, but it was the outside shooting of Kendra Clark and Natasha Blanton that caught them by surprise as they dropped a 71-54 decision to the Lady Jeeps Monday.

Cook finished with 24 points to lead the Lady Jeeps. Clark hit four 3-pointers and scored 18 points while Blanton had 10 points as she made two 3-pointers.

“We had a goal of holding Cook to 20 and we did pretty good, but they had some other girls who shot the lights out,” said Chesapeake coach Chris Ball.

Amanda Ruffner led the Lady Panthers with 18 points while Kimmie Bennett had 13 points.

“Ruffner and Bennett played well inside,” said Ball. “We played well against a good basketball team. Are we satisfied? No. But we’re taking a step in the right direction.”

Chesapeake jumped in front 13-6 lead in the first quarter as Courtney Heffner scored all 6 of her points.

South Webster came back to take a 23-21 lead at the half.

Ruffner got 6 points in the third quarter as Chesapeake cut the deficit to 3 before the Lady Jeeps pulled away to a 40-33 lead.

But Clark hit three 3-pointers and Blanton a pair of treys in the fourth quarter to stretch the lead. Clark, Blanton and Cook combined for 25 points as the Lady Jeeps outscored Chesapeake 31-21.

Chesapeake plays at Symmes Valley Monday.
