Copley triggers Panthers to OVC win

COAL GROVE — Nathan Copley was in the zone. The 3-point zone.

Copley drained six shots from behind the arc as he scored 24 points in just three quarters as the Chesapeake Panthers beat the Coal Grove Hornets 71-41 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We did pretty well defensively, we shot the ball well and we took care of the ball,” said Panthers’ coach Ryan Davis.

“They mixed up their defenses and our guys did a good job of adjusting.”

The game was tied 13-13 at the end of the first quarter as Colin Kennedy had 6 points for the Panthers.

Copley had 8 points in the second quarter and the defense held Coal Grove to 4 points as the Panthers took a 32-17 halftime lead.

Copley connected on three trifectas in the third quarter and scored 11 points and Trent Saunders added 8 points as the Panthers built a 57-31 cushion.

Saunders scored 6 more points in he fourth quarter before Davis emptied his bench.

Saunders finished with 21 points while Austin McMaster and Kennedy added 10 each.

Daniel “Oakie” Haynes had 10 points and Devin Monnier 9 — he had 7 in the third quarter — to pace the Hornets (4-2, 0-2).
