It’s good news, bad news for the Ironton Fighting Tigers.
The bad news is a few weeks ago, junior placekicker Izsak Unger suffered a torn patellar tendon in his left leg and it separated from the bone.
Unger uses his left foot as his plant foot and kicks with his right leg.
But here is the good news.
Unger attends St. Joseph High School and plays soccer for the Flyers. His replacement the past few weeks has been Michael Mahlmeister, a sophomore who also plays soccer for the Flyers.
A few years ago, the state legislature passed a bill that allows players at private schools to play a sport at the public school in the district where they live provided the private school does not offer that sport.
St. Joseph’s last football season was 1992, so students who live in Ironton and attend St. Joseph may play football at Ironton.
Another St. Joseph student Tre Neal also kicked for Ironton prior to Unger who took over those duties last season.
