South Point library branch hosts Halloween stage makeup workshop

SOUTH POINT — Halloween is just around the corner and children got a little help with costume ideas at a workshop at the South Point branch of the Briggs Lawrence County Public Library on Tuesday.

Torrie Miller, who does children’s programs at the library has been teaching special effects at the library’s branches over the month.

“We’re making realistic cuts and bruises, bites and open wounds,” she said.

All the ingredients for the makeup could be found in common household products.

Miller walked them through the process, which began by using liquid latex and tissue paper to sculpt a surface on their arms and hands.

Once that had dried, foundation makeup was applied to match the skin.

Then, they used paint to add garish colors.

Finally, they mixed up fake blood from chocolate syrup and food coloring and applied to the “wounds.”

“It’s edible,” miller said of the mixture.

A group of eight children, ranging in age from toddlers to sixth grade, took part in the workshop.

The main branch of the library will be hosting a session on Monday at 4 p.m.
