Waste district working on new contract

The recycling service provided by the Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District is temporarily suspended in both counties, as the district is working out a new contract with a new company.

“We are in negotiations for a new contract and, until this contract is ratified, we have no choice but to discontinue the recycling program,” district director Dan Palmer said. “Again, we hope this is for a short time, and we will keep you informed through the media.”

The district had 94 containers at 38 sites across both counties, which were all in the process of being pulled on Wednesday.

Recycling sites now temporarily unavailable in Lawrence County include Ohio University Southern, Ironton Middle School and the former Grandview Outlet in Ironton; Lawrence County Municipal Court and Chesapeake Elementary School in Chesapeake; Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department in Sheridan; Food Fair in Proctorville; Food Fair and Sam’s Club/Walmart in South Point; Rome Township Trustees Building, the county fairgrounds and Kroger Plaza in Rome Township; Paul Porter Park in Coal Grove; Wayne National Forest in Elizabeth Township; and the Ohio University Southern Child Development Center in Hanging Rock.

“Please have patience and understanding as we’re working through this,” Palmer said. “It may be several weeks, but we will have the sites back as soon as we can get a new contract worked out with a new company.”

Palmer said the current contract with Republic is over.
