Whether it’s a highway or a school zone, the speed doesn’t matter to the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers.
Ironton adjusted to the slow-down pace offense and box-and-one defense of the Chesapeake Lady Panthers to get a 32-24 Ohio Valley Conference win on Thursday.
With the defense focused on Ironton’s long-range shooting Haylee Stevens, Jada Rogers, Riley Schreck and Sophie Caines stepped up and did most of the offensive damage.
Rogers hit a pair of 3-pointers and score all eight of her points in the first quarter as Ironton took an 11-8 lead.
Maddie Ward hit a 3-pointer and scored five points in the quarter for Chesapeake.
Both teams scored six points in the second quarter and it was 17-14 at intermission.
Things remained slow in the third quarter with each team getting two points.
In the fourth quarter, Schreck drained a trifecta, Sarath Ratliff and Caines both made a pair of clutch foul shots while Lydia Hannan and Kameren Arden both had baskets as Ironton outscored the Lady Panthers 11-6.
Karli Davis, Shia Ervin and Ward had baskets to account for the Lady Panthers’ offense.
Rogers finished with eight point, Schreck seven and Caines six for Ironton (4-1, 4-1).
Ward had a game-high 11 points with Blanke Anderson getting five points for Chesapeake (3-3, 2-2).
On Monday, Ironton visits Ashland and Chesapeake goes to Grace Christian.
