GALLIPOLIS — Forget the trip to the doctor. The St. Joseph Lady Flyers got the medicine they needed.
Despite playing hard and aggressive, the Lady Flyers needed a booster shot of confidence and they got it with a 41-11 win over the Ohio Valley Christian Lady Defenders on Friday.
“We’ve thrown a lot at them and they’re starting to get it,” said Lady Flyers’ coach Bart Burcham.
“The biggest thing they’re lacking is confidence but we played with confidence tonight. This was what the doctor ordered. They needed to be able to do things right and see the success they can have by doing them.”
The Lady Flyers’ point guard Kaitlyn Sheridan not on had 10 points but turned in a strong defensive effort on the Lady Defenders’ leading scorer.
Faith Mahlmeister had 11 points and nine rebounds, Bella Whaley four points and five rebounds, Emma Whaley eight points and four rebounds and Emilee Blankenship four rebounds.
Chloe Sheridan, Bella Whaley and Mahlmeister all scored as the Lady Flyers took a 6-5 first quarter lead.
The defense then took over and held OVC to just one basket in each of the next three quarters.
St. Joseph (3-3) went up 15-7 at the half as Kaitlyn Sheridan hit a 3-pointer and scored seven of the nine points in the second quarter. Emma Whaley made two foul shots for the other points.
Emma Whaley had six points, Mahlmeister three and Kaitlyn Sheridan hit another trifecta as the lead grew to 27-9 after three quarters.
Mahlmeister scored six points while Laiken Unger, Emilee Blankenship and Bella Whaley had a basket to account for the St. Joseph scoring in the fourth quarter.
St. Joseph hosts Fairview, Ky., on Monday.
