It was Windex time for the Coal Grove Hornets.
The Hornets dominated the glass as they beat the St. Joseph Flyers 60-48 on Friday in the 11th annual Ironton Classic.
Coal Grove out-rebounded the Flyers 39-23 including 14-5 on the offensive end.
St. Joseph (5-2) hit eight 3-pointers for the game but was just 18-of-48 from the field for 37.5 percent and 8-of-24 from behind the arc for 33 percent.
The Hornets (4-2) shot well as they made 26-of-54 shots for 48 percent.
The Hornets took a 6-5 lead on a 10-footer by Jaylen McKenzie and never trailed the rest of the way.
A 3-pointer by Zach Roach got St. Joseph within 11-10 but the Hornets went on a 14-0 run to lead 25-10 when Aaron Music got a steal that he turned into a dunk.
A trifecta by Ryan Payne ended the run but the Hornets took their biggest lead of the game at 31-15 on a layup by Jaylen McKenzie.
Coal Grove was up 33-18 on a layup by McKenzie only to have Jimmy Mahlmeister and Isaac Whaley hit back-to-back triples and St. Joseph was down 33-23 at the half.
A 3-pointer by Roach got the Flyers within 35-29. The Hornets open up some breathing room on two foul shots and a layup by Payten Smith and it was 41-31.
Smith and Evan Gannon got layups before Whaley’s layup just before the buzzer made it 45-33.
Gannon’s 3-pointer put the Hornets lead at 50-35 before Payne’s 3-pointer and then layup off a pass from J.C. Damron to trail 56-46.
But two fouls by Borders made it 58-46.
Smith scored 18 points to lead all scorers. Evan Gannon scored 14 while McKenzie had 12 points — all in the first half. Music pulled down 10 rebounds and McKenzie six.
St. Joseph was led by Ryan Payne with 15 points with Whaley and Roach scoring 11 points each. Damron had 10 rebounds.
Coal Grove plays at Huntington St. Joseph on Wednesday and St. Joseph goes to Portsmouth Clay on Saturday.
