PORTSMOUTH — Cincinnati Reds’ Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Browning will be the guest speaker at the Portsmouth Murals 15th annual baseball banquet on Wednesday, Jan. 9.
This year’s murals will honor baseball scouts Billy Doyle, Frank Rickey, Wayne Blackburn and Gene Bennett.
A reception will be at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. to be held at the Friends Community Center, 1202 18th Street.
Tickets are $50 and available by calling (740) 353-7647.
Browning was a ninth-round draft selection by the Reds in 1982 and 20-9 in 1985 to become the first major league rookie in 31 years to win 20 games.
On Sept. 16, 1988, Browning beat the Los Angeles Dodgers as he pitched the only perfect game in Cincinnati Reds’ history.
Browning posted double digit wins from 1985-91 including 15 wins in the 1990 season when he helped the Reds win the World Championship.
Browning was the winning pitcher in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series and picked up a victory in Game 3 of the World Series against the heavily-favored Oakland Athletics.
In 1991, Browning began the season 10-4 and was named to the National League All-Star team.
Browning was elected to the Reds’ team Hall of Fame in 2006.
