Zach Roach is “In The Zone.”
After scoring 36 points on Saturday, the St. Joseph Flyers may have been wondering what you do for an encore.
Roach showed them what you do as he scored a career-high 40 points in a 78-51 win over the Sciotoville East Tartans on Tuesday.
“We had a great effort in the second half and Zach’s shooting was unbelievable,” said Flyers’ coach Chris Barnes.
“Jimmy Mahlmeister had his best game of the year. It was a great team effort rebounding and J.C. Damron guarded their best player and did a great job.”
Roach had four points and Jimmy Mahlmeister scored four more including a 3-pointers but the Flyers were down 11-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Isaac Whaley hit a triple and J.C. Damron scored four points in the second quarter, but it was Roach who ignited the offense with a pair of 3-pointers as he scored 14 points to put the Flyers up 31-27 at the half.
Roach — who made eight 3-pointers — didn’t cool off at halftime as he came out clicking with four more trifectas and he had 14 more points to give St. Joseph a 51-41 lead.
Although Roach was as potent in the fourth quarter as before, he still drained two more 3-pointers and scored eight points.
But the junior guard got plenty of help as Whaley hit another trey and scored five points and Mahlmeister took charge with nine points as the Flyers pulled away to the easy win.
Mahlmeister finished with 15 points while Whaley and Max Weber had eight points each.
Will Shope had 21 points — 12 in the second half — lead East. Kyle Flannery scored 16 points with nine coming in the first half.
The Flyers host St. Patrick on Friday.
