Defense triggers Panthers rout of Trojans

PORTSMOUTH — The offense was good, but the defense was better.
The Chesapeake Panthers held the Portsmouth Trojans to single digit scoring in three of the quarters as they posted a 60-31 Ohio Valley Conference win on Tuesday.
Eli Archer scored 17 points and Levi Blankenship had 12 to lead a balanced offense. Tylan Hutchison added nine points and Trent Dearth scored eight.
Portsmouth (5-11, 2-8) was led by Miles Shipp with just six points.
Chesapeake dominated on both ends of the court in the first quarter by taking a 24-6 lead. Archer scored 10 points including a 3-pointer. Nathan Cox nailed a pair of 3-pointers while Travis Grim and Blankenship each hit a trey.
Blankenship had another trifecta and scored seven points in the second quarter to match Portsmouth’s output and it was 33-13 at the half.
Dearth hit a 3-pointer and scored five points while Hutchison added four points and Logan Walsh made a trifecta and it was 47-20 at the end of three quarters.
Hutchison had five points as five different players scored in the fourth quarter.
On Friday, Chesapeake hosts Ironton and Portsmouth entertains Fairland.
