Betty Lou Owens

June 10, 1934 — Feb. 23, 2019

Our beautiful mother Betty Owens, 84, passed from this world to be with her Lord and Savior in heaven on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, at the Lantern of Morning Pointe in Russell, Kentucky.
In her last two days, she was surrounded by the love of all her children, her sisters, brothers and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her ever-devoted and loving husband of 62 years, Gilbert (Gib) Owens; her mother and father, Gladys and Buel (Pete) Worley; a baby brother, Kenneth Worley; two brothers-in-law, Sherman Runyon (Louise) and Bill Ackerman (Barb); and a nephew, Ronald “Mark” Campbell.
She is survived by her four children, Tim (Rose) Owens, Debra Kolodey (Duane), Anthony (Cindy) Owens, and Terry (Jessica) Owens; brothers, Dick (Fran) Worley, Jim (Diana) Worley, Barb (Bill) Ackerman, Louise (Sherman) Runyon, Wanda (Ronnie) Callicoat, and Rita (Butch) Conley;
11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Betty and Gib loved growing a vegetable garden, canning, beautifying their house and yard with flowers, sitting on their back porch watching the many hummingbirds attracted to the feeders they put out and exploring the woods and land by foot and four-wheeler, enjoying the gifts of God’s nature.
Playing Yahtzee and the slot machines were also favorite pastimes, as was traveling to the beaches of Florida and South Carolina and to Branson and Renfro Valley and many a church to listen to country and old-time gospel music.
Even as dementia was stealing Betty’s memory, she still knew the lyrics and loved to sing along and dance to many of the old gospel songs whether on the TV or played by a visiting musician at the Lantern, but especially when played and sung by her son, Terry.
Betty attended Waterloo High School, where she was the president of her class. She loved her children and was a dedicated mother and housewife who instilled in them a strong work ethic, frugality, a never give-up attitude and a love of reading.
True to their love of giving, Betty and Gib donated their bodies to the Human Gift Registry, Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. In death, as in life, Mom and Dad will help the living. There is a part of our hearts that is lost, never to be replaced, but the love in our hearts for you, Mom, is forever.

Johnny Ruggles

Nov. 7, 1959 — Feb. 24, 2019

Johnny Jenkins Ruggles, 59, of Pedro, passed away Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019, at Kings Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Kentucky.
The Lawrence County native was born Nov. 7, 1959, the son of Raymond (Denise) Ruggles and Lena Lawton, of Ironton.
Johnny was a graduate of Rock Hill High School and a former construction worker for U-Haul. He enjoyed four wheeling, being in the woods and
spending time with family and friends. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robin Ruggles.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a daughter, Manda Ruggles; two sons, Johnny and Benjamin Ruggles; ex-wife, Caroline Ruggles; two granddaughters, Capri and Eelahni Ruggles, all of Pomona Park, Florida; four brothers, Dennis Ruggles, Kevin (Bonnie) Ruggles, Charles (Mary Ann) Ruggles, all of Newport, Tennessee, and Raymond Scott Ruggles, of Morristown, Tennessee; and four sisters: Lisa (Darren) Russell of Ironton, Tammy (Kenny) Cooper of Kannapolis, North Carolina, Cheryl Ann Tinsley, of Morristown, Tennessee, and Devon Ruggles, of Louisville, Tennessee.
Funeral Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home, 518 S. 6th St. Ironton, Ohio 45638, with Elder Glenn Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow in Hanging Rock Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 11 a.m. until the time of
the service.

Maida Chapman

Maida P. Russell Chapman, 91, of Proctorville, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2019, at Wyngate at River’s Edge in Proctorville. She was married to Joe W. Russell for 42 years and Bernard “Bud” Chapman for eight years.

Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, with Rev. Bill Flannery and Rev. Harold Hamlin officiating.

John Edward Miller

Oct. 22, 1948 — Feb. 10, 2019

John Edward Miller, 70, of Ironton, passed away at his home on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019.
He was born Oct. 22, 1948, the son of the late Ray Miller and Dorothy Hutchinson Miller. He was a retired educator from the Rock Hill School District and Ohio University, one of the most talented, gifted and beloved by his students and colleagues. He never met a stranger.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Delores (Clyde) Sturgill; a brother, Donald Ray (Carolyn) Miller; a niece, Vickie Sturgill Deer; and two great-nephews, Heath Deer and Eric Deer.
He is survived by two sons, Christian Miller and David (Lisa) Miller; a grandson: Zachary Miller; former wife, Carol Hanshaw; a brother: Ronald Miller of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; former sister-in-law, Lana Miller; three nephews, Shawn and Todd Miller, both of Myrtle Beach, and Jeremy Deer, of Ironton; four nieces, Rhonda Miller Neal, of Woodstock, Georgia, Lisa Miller Gilliam, Lori Miller Deer and Tricia Miller Fields, of Ironton.

Grovetta Gracie Roberts, 101, of Dunbar, West Virginia, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2019 at Dunbar Center Nursing Home in Dunbar, West Virginia.

Delores Whitley

April 1, 1926 — Feb. 22, 2019

Delores “Dutch” Davidson Whitley, 92, of South Point, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 22, 2019.
She was born April 1, 1926 in Ashland, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Myrtle Nease Davidson.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Cecil R. Whitley; three sisters, Maxine Sloan, Eileen Sutton and Kathleen Sheppard; a brother, James Davidson; and a son-in-law, Ray Sloan.
Dutch attended the Sunrise Church of the Nazarene since she was seven years old and was a long time resident of South Point. Survivors include her daughter, Delores “Pug” Sloan, of Ironton; a sister, Elizabeth Austin, of South Point; two brothers, Robert Lee Davidson, Jr. and Ronald (Katie) Davidson, both of South Point; one sister-in-law, Marilyn Davidson of South Point; two grandsons, Joe (Julie) Sloan of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, and Matt (Kelli) Sloan, of Ironton; six great grandsons; one great granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services took place Tuesday at Slack and Wallace Funeral Home, South Point with Rev. Gary Henry officiating. Burial followed at Highland Memorial Gardens.

Marilyn Hairston

Marilyn Hairston, 70, of Huntington, West Virginia, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019 at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington. She is survived by her husband, Melvin Leroy Brisco.
Funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday at Full Gospel Assembly Church, 2101 10th Ave. Huntington, WV 25703. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
