Clifford Provencal Jr.

Feb. 1, 1940–Oct. 2, 2019

Clifford Edmond Provencal Jr. passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2019, in his home in Westerville.

Cliff was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on Feb. 1, 1940, son to the late Clifford and Louise (Farley) Provencal. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Mary Jeanine (Large) Provencal. Jeanine and Clifford celebrated their 30th anniversary. They were married in Haiku Gardens, Kaneohe, Hawaii on June 21, 1989. Their frequent visits to Hawaii were enriched by many friendships and membership in the NAGO Group, Okinawa Association.

He loved beaches and swimming in the ocean, but was equally happy climbing the hills of Southern Ohio. He was proud to be a member of the William Large family, JJJJ Ranch, Deering.

Cliff supported the Jesse Stuart Foundation and joined his friends in a yearly pilgrimage to the literary conference at the Jesse Stuart Lodge, which celebrates Kentucky’s Poet Laureate.

Cliff was a member of St. Ann Episcopal Church in Kennebunkport, Maine and First Community Church, Marble Cliff. His request was to have Pastor David Lambert, friend and fellow engineer, officiate his memorial service.

He joined the United States Navy in 1961. He proudly served his country, flying over 200 missions in three tours of Vietnam.

He served on the aircraft carrier, The Independence. After guided missile school in Dam Neck, Virginia, he was aboard the USS King, a guided missile destroyer, where he maintained missiles as a fire control technician.

He completed officer training in Newport, Rhode Island. He received his wings as a naval flight officer in Corpus Christi, Texas. He then became a tactical coordinator and a patrol squadron officer.

Clifford Provencal was awarded the Combat Air Medal for service in Vietnam.

He received his Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Purdue University. He also earned the title of professional engineer.

He worked for CIVES Construction in Auburn, Maine, then at Harriman and Associates as a project manager.

In 1985, he began his career with the Naval Air Station in Brunswick, Maine. When he retired as chief engineer in August 2005, he received a citation from the rear admiral of the U.S. Navy and a letter of appreciation came from President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, congratulating him on 32 years of service.

His associates honored him with a surprise luau, complete with a whole roasted pig, speeches and a barrage of rubber bands.

Cliff had a smile and encouraging words for each person he encountered. He was appreciated by friends, family and fellow workers.

The memorial service has been arranged by Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. Seventh St., Ironton.

Clifford Provencal’s Celebration of Life will be noon Saturday at First Baptist Church, Ironton. Pastor David Lambert is officiating. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. before the service. Military rites will be provided by VFW Post 8850.

William McGlone

June 14, 1931–Oct. 5, 2019

William “Bill” McGlone, 88, of Middletown, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019, in Spring Hill Assisted Living in Middletown.

Mr. McGlone was born June 14, 1931, a son to the late Crawford and Parnell (Cornell) McGlone. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Dillon McGlone and his second wife, Eileen Martin McGlone

Mr. McGlone was a United States Air Force veteran and retired from Ironton Water Treatment Plant. He enjoyed ballroom dancing and was a member of the Huntington Moose and a lifelong member of the VFW Post 9738 in Huntington, West Virginia. He formerly attended First United Methodist Church and Ellison Street Church of the Nazarene in Ironton.

In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by daughter, Renee McGlone, who passed away in 1970; grandson, William X. McGlone; six sisters, Goldie Mae McGlone, Sara Fisher, Anna Kingery, Lucille Gillenwater, Eva Adkins and Goldie Massie; and two brothers, John and Frank McGlone.

He is survived by son, Kyle W. (Amy) McGlone of Middletown; grandson, Ethan Waldo; and a dear and special friend, Jamie Keller.

Funeral service will be 1 pm. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. Seventh St., Ironton, with Pastor Scott Mann officiating. Burial will follow in Sugar Creek Cemetery with military graveside rites provided by VFW Post 8850. Visitation will be Thursday, 11 a.m. until time of the service at the funeral home.

Lawrence Walter

April 29, 1933–Oct. 5, 2019

Lawrence Lee Walter, devoted husband of 49 years, father of three, grandchildren of five, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019, at age 86.

Larry was born April 29, 1933, in Grandview, to George Sr. and Anna (Grigsby) Walter.

He attended Our Lady of Victory and Grandview Heights City Schools receiving his diploma in 1951. After high school, he continued to work for a local grocer.

He received his draft notice at the age of 20 and served two years for the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Upon discharge from the Army, he attended Franklin University in their accounting program.

He met the love of his life, Mona Lee Thompson, while working at the Federal Glass Company of Columbus. They wed in Columbus on Sept. 21, 1957. After many years of experience in and around the grocery store industry, he and his wife opened and successfully operated Walters Foods for 18 years in Whitehall.

Having been around the food industry for much of his life, Larry was very much an aficionado of fine home cooking which his wife proudly served…usually five to seven nights of the week, every week.

He was an avid music lover of country, jazz and orchestra genres. He was known for his amazing math abilities, his infectious laughter and smile and his story telling.

For fun, Larry enjoyed boating and waterskiing, playing in the yard with his family, swimming in the pool and being Mona’s helper in their vegetable garden… they were each other’s soul mates, best friends and coworkers. They personified what the American husband and wife should strive to be.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; several sisters and brothers-in-law; and his beloved wife, Mona.

He is survived by his three children, Von, Pamela, and Mark; five grandchildren, Jeff Francis, Kelsey Francis, Hans Walter, twins Claire and Mason Walter; brother, George Jr.; sisters-in-law, Nancy Walter and Betty Miller; many nieces and nephews; and friends through the years, Bob Gunderson, Jim Hess, Bonnie and Dave Huron and Mike Huron.

Family and friends may visit noon–1 p.m. on Thursday at the Dwayne R. Spence Funeral Home, 650 W. Waterloo St. Canal Winchester, with a funeral service to follow at 1 p.m. Interment at Franklin Hills Memory Gardens.

Albert Massie

Aug. 19, 1934–Oct. 6, 2019

Albert L. (Pete) Massie, 85, of South Point, died on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2019. The Lawrence County native was born Aug. 19, 1934 the son of the late James W. and Maggie Jones Massie. Also preceding him was his wife, Avanelle; brothers, Carl Massie and Ron Holston; and one sister, Doris Taylor.

Survivors include one sister, Mary Willis; one brother, John Holston; and many nieces and nephews.

He retired from the U.S. Air Force after twenty years of service. He was a life member of the VFW 8850.

Funeral will be on Friday at noon at O’Keefe Baker Funeral Home with Pastor Jeff Cremeans officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday from 6–9 p.m. at the funeral home.

VFW Post 8850 will perform military graveside services. Burial will be in Lawrence Furnace Cemetery.

 

Robert Nothstine

Robert Nothstine, 78, of Powell, died at his home on Monday, Oct. 7, 2019.

Ernest L. Wilkes, 70, of Chesapeake, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2019, at Heartland of Riverview, South Point.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville. Burial will follow in Miller Memorial Gardens, Miller. Visitation will be held 10–11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Steve Pigg, 68 of Proctorville, died Wednesday Oct. 2, 2019, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington, West Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Connie.
