Chesapeake mayoral race remains tied

The Lawrence County Board of Elections will conduct their official canvass of all races Saturday at the county courthouse.

“We have to get everything certified,” Toni Trospher, deputy director of the office, said.

Trospher said elections workers would add provisional ballots and “anything that came in or was postmarked by the date of the election.” The process will begin at 8 a.m.

Still unresolved is the mayoral election in Chesapeake, where the top two finishers, incumbent Tommy Templeton and challenger Kim Oldaker, were tied in unofficial results with 77 votes each.

Trospher said if that race was still tied or extremely close after the canvass, then a recount would occur.

“This would take place if it’s less than one half of one percent,” she said of the margin between candidates.

Should a tie remain after a recount, than the winner would be determined by drawing lots in a public setting.
