Charlotte Hurn

Dec. 14, 1924–Feb. 19, 2020

Charlotte Mary (Waldahl) Hurn, 95, of Oak Island, North Carolina, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2020, at Lower Cape Fear Life Care Center in Bolivia, North Carolina.

Mrs. Hurn was born Dec. 14, 1924, in Claressa, Minnesota, a daughter to the late Charles and Ethel (Summie) Waldahl. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Beauford Hurn, who passed away Jan. 29, 1995.

Charlotte attended Claressa High School and she was a former member of Sharon Baptist Church, where she was a substitute Sunday school teacher for 10 years. Charlotte was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years, a member of the Order of Amaranth – Ideal Court #4, the White Shrine of Jerusalem – Portsmouth Shrine #45 and Daughters of American Revolution – Portsmouth Chapter. Upon moving to North Carolina, she became a member of First Baptist Church of Oak Island and was also a member of Oak Island Quilters Guild.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by, six brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by a daughter, Denise (David) Justice of Oak Island, North Carolina; a granddaughter, Crystal (Jeremy) DeGroot; a great grandson, Henry Gus DeGroot; and a great granddaughter, Alice Charlotte DeGroot.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Sharon Baptist Church, 2010 S. Fifth St., Ironton, with Rev. Steve Harvey officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery and visitation will be 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

The family has requested in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lower Cape Fear Life Care Center, 955 Mercy Lane, Bolivia, NC 28422.

Judy Cox

July 29, 1948– Feb. 20, 2020

Judy G. Cox, age 71, of Jamestown, passed peacefully, surrounded by her children, on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2020.

Born in Lawrence County on July 29, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Lester Simpson and Eva Henderson Arehart.

Judy was a devoted homemaker. She loved attending church and taking care of her family including her beloved grandchildren. Judy enjoyed trips to the casino, playing the lottery and bingo, as well as painting rocks and watching TV.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth ‘Lee’ Cox, and daughter, Shana Gail Cox.

Left to cherish her memory are daughters, Bobbi Jo (Cecil) Piner, Karri Mae (Josh) Thompson, Teri (Juvie) Chagoya, and very special daughter and caregiver, Pam Crum; sons, Wylie Crum, Kevin (Melinda) Wilson, and Kenny (Tonya) Cox; 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by siblings, Thelma (Bill, deceased) Funk, Carla Tackett, Debbie (John) Hansen and Terry (Melissa) Wilson; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends at Littleton Funeral Home, Sabina, on Monday from 5-7 p.m., and on Tuesday, from 11 a.m.–noon, when a funeral service will begin, officiated by Pastor Trudy Leis. Burial is to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bowersville. A meal and fellowship, after burial, will be held at the Bowersville Church of Christ Annex in Bowersville.

Eva Sites

April 13, 1949– Feb. 20, 2020

Eva M. Wilson Sites, 70, of Ironton, passed away Thursday, Feb. 20, 2020, at SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth.

The Lawrence County native was born April 13, 1949, the daughter of the late Everett Wilson and Anna Collins Wilson. She is survived by her husband of 50 plus years, Clarence L. Sites, whom she married on Aug. 16, 1969.

Eva was a graduate of Ironton High School and a former employee of Cabletron, where she worked for 12 years, along with numerous other retail stores. She was also a homemaker and of the Protestant faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, George, Roger and Everett (Mutt) Wilson; and a sister, Mary Wilson.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Kristi (Cecil) Wilds, of Ironton, and Amy (Justin) Shimer, of Ironton; three grand-daughters, Alison Wilds, Natalie Wilds, and Haley Shimer

a grandson, Hudson Shimer; two brothers, Steve and Jimmy Wilson, both of Ironton; three sisters, Ruth Wood, of Lima, Juanita Wilson and Phyllis Wilson, both of Ironton; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. Seventh St., Ironton, with Pastor Willie Purdee officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday noon until the time of the service at the funeral home.
