UAB too much for Marshall, Kinsey

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Marshall men’s basketball (14-15, 8-8 C-USA) fell in Birmingham to UAB (17-12, 8-8 C-USA), 88-80, on Thursday night at Bartow Arena.
“We played a lot harder than the first time we were down here,” Marshall head coach Dan D’Antoni said after the game. “They (UAB) played extremely well. They did what they had to do to win.”
Sophomore Taevion Kinsey led the Herd with 22 points and a team-high seven assists.
Redshirt sophomore Iran Bennett followed up Kinsey with 17 points on a 5-for-10 night from the field. The forward also made 7-of-9 from the free-throw line and had six rebounds.
Going 5-for-10 from the field, including 4-of-6 on three-point attempts, junior Jarrod West finished the game with 17 points, bringing down four rebounds to go with a pair of assists and steals.
Redshirt freshman Andrew Taylor closed out four in double figures with 11 points. Taylor tied Bennett and junior Mikel Beyers for the team-high in rebounds with six, while recording a team-high four steals.
Marshall took the opening tip and got on the board first with a made free-throw by Bennett. UAB then went on a 4-0 run and didn’t relinquish the lead back to the Herd until the 14:54 mark when Kinsey and West combined for a 4-0 run to give MU a 10-8 lead.
Marshall extended its lead to six, 17-11, with just over 13 minutes left in the opening half, but the Blazers went on an 11-3 run to have Marshall trailing 22-20 at the 10:10 mark.
The two teams traded the lead until UAB used a pair of 7-0 runs with less than six minutes remaining in the opening stanza to put a stranglehold on the lead the rest of the way as MU trailed 48-42 at the break.
Marshall went 7-for-15 from behind-the-arc in the first half, while UAB shot 50 percent (20-for-40) from the field.
The Blazers led for the duration of the second half, extending its lead to double-digits with just under 11 minutes left in the game and eventually extending its lead to as many as 18 in the final half.
NOTES
Kinsey has reached double figures in 27 games this season with this being his fifth game of 20 or more points.
West has reached double-figures in all, but four games this season.
Bennett and Taylor has scored at least 10 points in back-to-back games
