No excuse for abuse of sites

How one can amass 85 bags of kitty litter is a little baffling, but, even more so is what would possess a person to then dump that waste into a recycling bin clearly marked for paper, plastic and metal.

But, sadly, that is exactly what happened recently, and that person’s actions, along with others abusing the containers, led to the Lawrence-Scioto County Solid Waste Management District deciding on Friday to pull the bins.

However, on Monday, the Lawrence and Scioto county commissioners intervened and said the receptacles would stay in place.

These recycling sites are handled by workers from Star Community Justice Center and, with all the concerns surrounding the coronavirus going on right now, this is another headache they do not need.

Simply put: Don’t be a self-absorbed jerk and abuse this system. There is no excuse.

And, if you see anyone doing so, please report them. Authorities have said they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

To report the car tag number or property information of a person illegally dumping, call the Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District at 740-532-1231.

We thank all those working during this crisis, from those who handle recycling sites to sanitation workers collecting at households.

Officials have said if abuse continues, they will pull the containers, which are a valuable community service.

Please be helpful and show some community spirit and do not mess this up.
