DD awareness is important part of March

Together. That is a simple word that has a powerful meaning. The Lawrence County Board of Developmental Disabilities has that as the central theme for its annual awareness month efforts.

The goal is to show that those with disabilities are just like everyone else and that so much can be gained when we come together as one community.

Having been a part of these events for many years, it is fair to say that those who participate get far more in return than they give. The rewards are limitless.

In order to open people’s eyes and provide a way to see for themselves, the board has a variety of events planned including a food drive, charity basketball games, balloon launches, a Dr. Seuss celebration and the annual chili fest and craft show.

These efforts are all very important because they can go a long way toward breaking down stereotypes and the stigma that is often associated with individuals with disabilities.

The more than 500 men, women and children that the board serves are each their own individuals with their own emotions, dreams and goals.

For decades, it has been the goal of the developmental disabilities board to make those dreams come true.

Awareness month is a key first step in that and the entire community has the opportunity to do its part.
