SOUTH POINT — For a half, Doug Shilot had something to feel good about.

Despite being out-manned in size and experience, the South Point Pointers trailed the unbeaten Portsmouth West Senators just 22-0 at the half.

In fact, the Pointers had the ball twice inside the West 30-yard line after turnovers and got the ball to the 6-yard line once only to be turned away.

But West took charge of the game in the second half and rolled to a 49-6 win Friday night.

“I felt pretty good about (the first half),” said Shilot. “West put it on the ground a few times and we had pretty good field position and we failed put it.

“We played fairly physical. We weren’t out-hit. They had a couple of backs who were older and more experienced. Their line is more experienced.”

One of the more experienced backs was Trevon Pendleton who ran 10 times for 163 yards and two touchdowns. Adam Bricker added 57 yards on six carries as West finished with 342 yards rushing on 37 attempts.

Quarterback Levi Ratliff was 5-of-9 passing for 111 yards as the Senators rolled up 453 total yards.

South Point (1-2) was led by quarterback Tevin Mitchell with 52 yards rushing on 17 carries.

“It’s stepping stones. We’re just trying to keep building and getting better at what we do,” said Shilot.

Portsmouth West (3-0) fumbled the opening kickoff and coughed up the ball later in the quarter. But the Pointers were unable to capitalize on either turnover.

West finally scored on a 1-yard run by Bricker with 4:29 left in the first quarter and Kyle Auger’s conversion kick made it 7-0.

Ratliff threw two touchdown passes in the second quarter covering 22 yards to Auger and 17 to Kyle Locher and it was 22-0 at the break.

The Senators took a 28-0 lead on a 12-yard run by Pendleton early in the third quarter. The Pointers came back to score on a 1-yard run by Kyle Dickess and it was 28-6.

But Ratliff threw 26 yards to Locher for a touchdown and Pendleton bolted 21 yards for a score and it was 42-6 with 7:21 to play.

The Pointers then fumbled on their next possession and Auger scooped up the ball and ran it back 15 yards for a touchdown to cap the scoring.
