CHILLICOTHE — The South Point Lady Pointers gave the Miami Trace Lady Panthers a taste of their own medicine.

The Lady Pointers used pressure defense and an attacking offense to easy beat Miami Trace 66-32 Thursday in the Division II district semifinals.

“They’ve been pretty good defensively. They hold teams to 30 points and under,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Dave Adams.

“We had a game plan and we executed it pretty much to what we wanted to do. When we put four quarters together and shoot well, we’re pretty tough.”

South Point was 26 of 51 from the field for 51 percent and 6 of 11 from the 3-point line. The defense forced 21 turnovers.

The Lady Pointers also held the Lady Panthers leading scorer Ashley Lawson to just two points. Lawson has already committed to Youngstown State.

“We played really well. Shot the ball really well. Kayla (Fletcher) picked up two fouls early and sat out most of the second quarter but we still won the quarter and people off the bench helped out. Everyone played their role,” said Adams.

Jalynn Bradburn led South Point with 21 points and Fletcher scored 20. Erin Dillow had 11 points including three 3-pointers. Allison Mitchell grabbed eight rebounds.

“That was Jalynn’s best game all-around this year,” said Adams. “She got to the basket when she wanted and she shot well and helped hold us together.”

The Lady Pointers went on a 13-2 run to start the game and led 20-6 at the end of the first quarter.

With Fletcher on the bench in the second quarter, the Lady Pointers were still able to pull away to a 32-16 halftime lead.

“They are a very good ball club,” said Lady Panthers’ coach James Stutzman whose team finished 20-2.

“Don’t take anything away from South Point. They’re a very good team, deserving of a lot of credit. They took us out of the stuff we were trying to do. But our focus, our dedication, was just not here tonight.”

The Lady Pointers eliminated any suspense to start the second half as they scored 15 unanswered points to begin the third quarter and pulled away to a 53-22 lead.

They scored the first six points of the third quarter to lead 59-22 and basically took the air of the ball the rest of the game as they ran out the clock for the easy win.

South Point (19-3) will play Marietta at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, in the district finals at the Ohio University Convocation Center. Marietta edged Jackson 40-38.

The day and time is tentative pending Ohio University hosting an MAC tournament game.
