Two Lawrence County World War II veterans will be honored for their service to their country as the county commissioners voted to rename a road in their honor.

At its regular Thursday meeting commissioners agreed to rename Coryville Road or Old State Route 75 the Collins and Washburn Road in honor of Buel Collins of South Point and Bill Washburn of Ironton.

Both men attended the former Coryville grade school and spent time as prisoners of war.

Since this is a county road, commissioners were able to make the change without input or approval from the Ohio Department of Transportation. Signage is expected to come in in about three weeks. At that time there will be an unveiling ceremony.

Dan Palmer, director of the Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste District, told the commission that there will be a countywide tire amnesty day on Friday, April 8, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. County residents, who must show proof of residency, can bring tires to the Burlington-Fayette Fire Department on County Road for free disposal.

Tires must be off the rim and there is a limit of 20 tires per person. Businesses cannot participate.

“You can get rid of your tires at no cost,” Palmer said. “It is a way to do the right thing.”

In other business the commission:

•Approved travel requests for Lonnie Best, the Veterans Service Commission and staff and Mike Boster;

•Amended the travel policy to remove per meal restrictions but continue the $40 per day cap on amounts that will be reimbursed.

•Received the weekly dog warden’s report where 16 dogs were destroyed; 14 dogs were sold and four were redeemed by owners. That week there were 65 dogs in custody.
