If ever a family needed community support, it would be Amy Wilcox and her children.

The Perry Township woman was allegedly assaulted and then badly burned in a fire at her residence April 29. Thankfully, her family and her church are both rallying to her aid.

We hope to see others in the community do the same, an example that has already been set by many.

Wilcox remains in a Cincinnati area hospital and her family is taking care of her two children and also providing for Amy’s needs.

Her husband, Tom Wilcox, remains in a Louisville, Ky., hospital. He has been charged with felonious assault in connection with the incident at Amy Wilcox’s residence two weeks.

But the spirit of giving has already been on display in many ways.

Students, faculty and staff at Collins Career Center took up a collection for Wilcox’s two children to help with expenses while their mother is hospitalized. Wilcox taught special education at the school.

Wilcox’s church, Community Missionary Baptist, has planned a benefit from noon to 4 p.m. May 16 at Dawson-Bryant High School.

The issue truly isn’t about who did what or how this situation became the tragedy that it did. That debate is left for another day. Tom Wilcox will have his day in court.

Right now, the most important thing is that the community lend a shoulder of support for the family and the Wilcox children.

If the preliminary results are any indication, Lawrence County will continue to show its giving spirit and make all of us proud to live here.
