PROCTORVILLE — It’s not how hard you hit them, but just hit them.

The Fairland Dragons collected 10 hits as they beat the Coal Grove Hornets 10-2 Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

The Dragons were coming off a win over Rock Hill on Tuesday that clinched the OVC title. Coach Roger Snyder said his team appeared to be suffering from a letdown.

“We didn’t hit the ball as hard and we seemed a little flat, but we played pretty well. Our pitchers threw strikes and we scored when we had to,” said Snyder.

Tyler Thackston went five innings to get the win. He struck out nine, walked one and gave up two hits and one earned run. Tyler Godby and Cole Hatfield each threw one inning in relief.

Fairland snapped a scoreless tie with two runs in the third inning.

Zach Jordan and Hatfield singled and Robbie Easterling hit a sacrifice fly. Thackston singled in the second run.

Coal Grove got a run in the fourth when Oakie Haynes singled, stole second and came home on a hit by Wayne Sparks.

But the Dragons scored four times in the bottom of the inning.

Ethan Long reached on an error, pinch-runner Sowards moved up on a hit by Chad Fisher and Javier Rowe beat out an infield hit to load the bases.

Jordan doubled home two runs, Hatfield grounded out as a run scored and Easterling hit his second sacrifice fly.

The Dragons made it 8-1 in the fifth.

Godby doubled, Justin Earl singled and Fisher was safe on an error. Godby scored on a passed ball and Jordan hit a sacrifice fly.

The Hornets scored a run in the sixth on a hit by Drew Jenkins, an error and a ground out.

Fairland capped the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Easterling and Thackston walked, Matasich singled to load the bases and Matt Campbell walked to force in a run. Earl capped the rally with a sacrifice fly.

Fairland (12-1, 9-0) hosts Rock Hill on Friday.
