PORTSMOUTH (AP) – Ohio forestry officials hope higher humidity and the possibility of rain will help put out a Shawnee State Forest fire they’ve been battling for four days.

Forestry Division spokesman Andy Ware said Tuesday the fire has swept across about 2,600 acres of the 63,000-acre forest in southeast Ohio. More firefighters and equipment have arrived to help.

Ware says Ohio averages about 4,500 acres of forest lost to fire each year.

A volunteer firefighter was charged with arson and possession of criminal tools after trying to flee when officers approached him near the site of the fire last weekend. Ware says the man has not been accused of starting the fires.
