Celebrating the present, eyeing a bright future

The 1989 film “Field of Dreams” made the catch phrase “if you build it, they will come,” part of our modern vocabulary.

That concept seems to hold very true in economic development circles across the country and certainly here in southern Ohio.

Tuesday was a good day for Lawrence County as local officials welcomed Chatham Steel and cut the ribbon on the new facility in The Point industrial park.

It is fitting that, on the same day as the celebration that was in part made possible by the fact a building was ready to go at The Point, county leaders got word from the Ohio Department of Development that the Lawrence Economic Development Corp. could receive a combination loan and grant package to build another spec building at the industrial park.

This has been a very successful approach at The Point as every structure built now houses business and industry and the much-needed jobs that come with those.

We applaud LEDC officials for their hard work in making this celebratory day come to fruition as well as their continued vision for the future.

We would like to see Ironton’s development leaders take a similar approach for its industrial park. Hopefully, the LEDC will assist in this process.

In “Field of Dreams” it was baseball players that made the journey after a field was built. For Lawrence County, we hope it is jobs that arrive here to fill empty buildings.
