Doubling Up

CHESAPEAKE — It was a time to share. Victories, that is.

Ironton scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out an 11-10 win in the first game, and Chesapeake came back to win in the nightcap 9-1.

“I think we both were a little short on pitching, but we did a good job of coming back at the end to win the first game. It was nice to see our kids come through under pressure,” said Ironton coach Tobey Schreck.

Ironton jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of the first game.

Johnathon Schweickart singled, Keith Wetzel doubled, Geoff White walked and Jonathan Williams doubled in a pair. Darren Dalton was safe on an error for a run and Taylor Barker grounded out to score Dalton.

Ironton got a run in the second when Pancake tripled and Schweickart singled.

Chesapeake erupted for six runs in the fourth inning.

Colton Lindsey singled to open the inning and Gabe Freyre doubled. Jimmy Conrad doubled in both runners and then Brandon Noble and Matt Angle singled for a run. Wes Lezu was safe on an error as a run scored.

Shane Pelfrey was safe on a fielder’s choice for a run. A throwing error scored a run and sent Pelfrey to third base where he scored on a wild pitch.

Each team scored four in the fifth inning.

Freyre led off the Panthers inning with a base hit and Baise was safe on an error. Conrad walked. Noble singled for a run and Angle hit into a fielder’s choice for a run.

Lezu walked, Pelfrey hit a sacrifice fly and Travis Zimmerman had an RBI single.

In the bottom of the inning, Lucas singled, Harper reached on an error and Pancake had a two-run double. Wetzel walked, stole second, and a run scored on a hit by White. A wild pitch sent home a run.

The Panthers took an 11-10 lead in the sixth when Baise doubled, moved up on a ground out and came home as Angle reached on an error.

But Ironton scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to win.

With one out, Pancake walked and Schweickart singled. A wild pitch moved the runners up and Wetzel was walked intentionally. White was safe on an error as two runs scored.

In the second game, Chesapeake bounced back to win 9-1.

Pelfrey went the distance in the second game to get the win. He struck out five, walked two and gave up just three hits.

“That’s the best he’s thrown all year. His stuff was working,” said Panthers’ coach Joe Waugh.

Chesapeake took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. With tow outs, Angle singled, stole second and scored on a hit by Lezu. Pelfrey followed with an RBI double.

The lead went to 5-0 in the fourth.

Lindsey was hit by a pitch, stole second and Baise had an RBI single. Harris doubled for a run and scored on a ground out.

Ironton got its run in the fifth when Dalton reached on an error, stole second, moved up on a balk and White singled.

The Panthers got the run back in the bottom of the inning on a walk to Pelfrey, Zimmerman’s base hit, a sacrifice bunt by Lindsey and Nick Parnell grounded out.

Chesapeake got its final three runs in the sixth inning.

Harris singled, Tommy Noble hit into a fielder’s choice, Jarred Brown reached on an error, Lezu singled to load the bases, Pelfrey hit a sacrifice fly and Zimmerman and Lindsey reached on errors to score two runs.
