Museum opening set for April 5

IRONTON — The opening of the 2009 season of the Lawrence County Historical Society will be 1-4 p.m. Sunday, April 5.

A sports exhibit will feature Dick Burdett signing his two books, “Famous Waterloo Wonders” and “The Waterloo Wonders.” Burdett will also give a speech. Also on display will be Don “Blondie” Sanders’ collection of photos of 1940s’era Ironton High School basketball.

The museum will host its annual Easter egg hunt at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 11. The Easter bunny will make an appearance and some eggs have hidden surprises.

The museum is at 506 S. Sixth St.

Humane society to help spay animals

IRONTON — The Lawrence County Humane Society is offering assistance to area residents who wish to spay their female cats and dogs.

The humane society has received a donation from the Emma Arundel Foundation to help with the cost of spaying female cats and a donation from the Ironton Moose Lodge to help with the cost of spaying female dogs. The humane society will issue certificates pet owners may take to participating veterinarians.

Last year more than 50 cats and 30 dogs were spayed, according to information from the humane society. For more information call Alberta Wise at 532-6624.

Benefit helps Youth Group Relay for Life

PROCTORVILLE — The Windsor Independent Church Youth Group Relay for Life of Lawrence County is sponsoring a Spaghetti Dinner and Songfest at Windsor Independent Methodist Church, located approximately six miles out State Route 775 in Proctorville, Saturday, April 4.

The dinner which begins at 5 p.m. includes Spaghetti, salad, roll, dessert and beverage.

All donations will go towards Windsor’s Youth Group Relay for Life team for the American Cancer Society. Singing will begin after the dinner.

Singers will be The Conners, Heather and Jessica Adkins of Wayne County W.Va., and Windsor Quartet.

OLBH offers free health screenings

ASHLAND, Ky. — Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital (OLBH) will be conducting free health screenings in conjunction with the Wednesday, April 8 Mall Walkers breakfast.

The event takes place at the Ashland Town Center from 8 – 10 a.m.

For the most accurate screenings, it is recommended attendees fast the morning of testing.

Screenings will include checks of cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure and hemoglobin.

Info ready for teen volunteer program

ASHLAND, Ky. — Information packets are now available for the King’s Daughters Medical Center (KDMC) Summer Teen Volunteer Program.

Packets can be picked up at the Volunteer Services department (lower level of Lexington Avenue parking facility, 2201 Lexington Ave.), or call 606.408.4425 to request one.

To be eligible, teens must be 14 years of age by June 1, 2009.

Last year, more than 150 teens volunteered at KDMC, assisting with patient care, clerical duties and child development activities.
