Celebrate Recovery aims to help heal wounds of habit

It is a chance to share burdens and hopes with people who know and understand what you’re going through.

Sharon Baptist Church is offering the Celebrate Recovery program on Thursdays at the church.

Started at the Saddleback Church in Lake Forest Calif., the Celebrate Recovery, according to its literature, aims to heal “hurts, habits and hang-ups” with a 12-step program that has a decidedly Christian, though non-denominational, perspective.

Small group sessions focus on specific topics such as substance abuse, codependency, eating disorders and anger management, to name a few. Both those who are suffering from these issues and their loved ones are welcome to attend. Group leaders stress this is not a therapy session and this is not meant to “fix anybody” but to offer support and hope in a safe environment.

“They learn to depend on Christ instead of their habits,” said Shelley Stone, who leads the worship service.

The sessions have averaged 25 people. The program was begun at Sharon Baptist Church last year but was not advertised. It is also in use in several churches in the Ashland, Ky., area.

“We want this to be for the community,” Deacon Curt Williams said.

Celebrate Recovery meets each Thursday at Sharon Baptist Church. It begins at 6:20 p.m. with food and fellowship followed by a main meeting with worship at 7 p.m. and small group sessions at 8 p.m.
