Getting funds for major repair work slow going

Right now there are 571 sites the county wants FEMA money for in order to make permanent repairs following the spring rains that did massive damage to those roads and bridges.

Each one has to be physically reviewed by a FEMA representative before the money gets OK’d. As of Thursday, only six had been appraised.

“It will be a long process to recover,” County Engineer Doug Cade told the county commission at its Thursday meeting. “We are asking people to be patient with it.”

The countywide damage tally comes in at 102 landslides, 119 bridges washed out and 249 bridges with debris underneath that must be removed to prevent additional decay of the structure.
