Waldo Bowman

Waldo Bowman, 93, of Ironton passed away Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011, at his residence. The Lawrence County native was born March 31, 1918, the son of the late Miles and Ethel (Melvin) Bowman.

In addition to his parents, Waldo was also preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Jen Alice (Day) Bowman; two brothers, William B. Bowman and Berkley Bowman; and a sister, Winona Hastings.

Waldo was a 1937 graduate of Dawson-Bryant High School. He was also a veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific as a Navy Seebee in the 42nd Naval Construction Battalion from 1942-1946. Waldo went on to work as a salesman and buyer for Mearan’s clothing of Ironton and Wolff Den’s clothing store in Portsmouth. In addition, he worked approximately 10 years at the Tracy Brammer Funeral Home.

Waldo was a member of the American Legion Post #23 of Portsmouth, former Lawrence County Chairman of Selective Service; 50-year member of the Lawrence Lodge #198 F&AM; member of the Order of the Eastern Star #437; a 50-year Scottish Rite member of the Valley of Cincinnati Consistory; 30-year member of the Ohio Highway Patrol Auxillary; 50-year member of the UCT; and member of First United Methodist Church, where he served on various committees and boards.

Waldo is survived by a son, Jeffry S. Bowman, Ph.D. of Ironton; two grandsons, Christopher (Guiseppina) Bowman of Spring, Texas and David (Janine) Bowman of Rowlett, Texas

Graveside services with military rites will be conducted by VFW Post 8850 at 11 a.m. Monday at Woodland Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Wayne Young officiating. Procession to cemetery will begin formation at 10 a.m. on the morning of the service at the funeral home. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Tracy Brammer – Monroe Funeral Home today with a Masonic service at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flower, the family has asked for donations to be sent to Community Hospice of Ashland, 1538 Central Avenue, Ashland, KY 41101.
