Zornes turns in big week

PINE GROVE — Josh Zornes is really in the swing of things.

The Ironton Fighting Tigers’ senior golfer continued his strong play in three matches over the past week.

Zornes first a 35 to take medalist honors in a tri-match against Coal Grove and South Point.

Coal Grove had a 175 team score to win the match followed by Ironton at 209 and South Point had a 218.

Jaylen Thornhill carded a 50 for Ironton with Rhett Ball shooting a 60 and Travis Taylor 64.

Coal Grove was led by Brent Morgan with a solid round of 38. Conor Markins was next with a 44. Callie Taylor had a 45 to pace South Point.

In a match on Monday against Chesapeake, Zornes blistered the Ironton Country Club course with a 34 as he racked up seven pars and two birdies to take medalist honors.

Chesapeake’s Nick Duffield also played well as he finished one shot off the pace set by Zornes. The Panthers posted a 156 score while Ironton finished at 215.

Seth Waggoner had a 39 for the Panthers while Drew Oxley and Eric Sias each had 9-hole totals of 41.

Thornhill finished with a 51, Taylor 64 and Ball 66 for Ironton.

Last week in the Portsmouth West Invitational at the Portsmouth Elks Country Club, Zornes began his week with a rounds of 35and 37 en route to a 72 in the 18-hole event.

The score was good enough for Zornes to tie for second place individually behind medalist Austin Bagshaw of Hillsboro who shot a 69.

Gallipolis won the tournament with a 316 score behind Nick Saunders who also shot a 72.

West Union was the runner-up with a 326 followed by Hillsboro at 337, Jackson 338, Chillicothe 346, Waverly 355, Portsmouth Notre Dame 362, Portsmouth 376, Wheelersburg 376, Ironton 421 and Northwest 447.

Thornhill was next for Ironton with a 106 score on rounds of 54 and 52. Ball shot a 120 and Taylor 123.
