Prep Roundup: Flyers tie Northwest; Pointers blank Valley

The St. Joseph Flyers and Northwest Mohawks played to a 1-1 tied in a soccer game Thursday at Clouston Field.

“It was an excellent game. Both team played hard for 80 minutes,” said Flyers’ coach Dan Blair. “Both teams had their chances but failed to capitalize.”

Eli Lewis had the Flyers’ only goal off an assist from Nick Roach.

Northwest had an unassisted goal by Linus Schnack.

South Point 1, Vally 0

SOUTH POINT — The South Point Pointers picked up their first soccer win of the season by blanking the Lucasville Valley Indians 1-0.

Michael Lien had the game’s lone goal in the 23rd minute with an assist from Danny Eckert.

Pointers’ goalie Brady Rickard had six saves for the Pointers.

South Point (1-1-3) hosts Ironton St. Joseph at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Chesapeake 1, Ports. West 1

WEST PORTSMOUTH – The Chesapeake Panthers and Portsmouth West Senators battled to a 4-4 tie on Thursday in a soccer game

Aris Garcia had two goals while Daniel Chapman and Ryan Garcia scored one each.

The Panthers are now 0-3-1, their first non-loss in the program’s two-year history.

Lady Dragons beat

Lady Pointers in OVC

PROCTORVILLE — The Fairland Lady Dragons opened the Ohio Valley Conference season with a win over the defending champion South Point Lady Pointers in four sets.

Fairland won 25-15, 19-25, 25-15 and 25-19.

Taylor Phillips scored 19 points to lead the Lady Dragons. Lauren Poe had 7 points and 4 kills while Kayla Swiger added 3 digs.

Bonnie Hileman had 11 points and Aundrea Bradburn 6 to pace South Point.

Fairland hosts Rock Hill on Tuesday in an OVC game.

Coal Grove tops Chesapeake

in OVC volleyball

CHESAPEAKE — The Coal Grove Lady Hornets won their second straight volleyball game as they beat the Chesapeake Lady Panthers in an Ohio Valley Conference match on Thursday.

The Lady Hornets won 25-16, 25-16 and 25-18 with six different players scoring in double figures led by Cheyenne Bellomy with 15 and Ashley Adkins 14.

Gabbie Carpenter scored 13 points, Bailey Harrison 11, and Haley Johnson and Cami Hillier 10 each. Johnson had 9 kills and Harris 7 kills.

In the reserve match, Chesapeake won 25-21, 25-20 and 25-17.

Coal Grove (2-0) plays at South Point on Tuesday.

Ironton falls in golf tri-match

WEST UNION — The West Union Dragons proved to be too strong on their home course as they won a tri-match over the Ironton Fighting Tigers and Coal Grove Hornets.

The Dragons finished with a 133-team score to win the tri-match. Coal Grove shot a 158 and Ironton finished with a 187.

West Union’s Tanner Huntley took advantage of the short home course to shoot a 2-under 31 and claim medalist honors.

Josh Zornes shot an even par 33 to lead Ironton. Jaylen Thornhill had a 45, Rhett Ball carded a 50 and Travis Taylor finished with a 59, all season-best for the latter trio.

Conor Markins also shot an even par 33 to pace the Hornets. Brent Morgan was a stroke back at 34.

Coty Davidson had a 43 and Brandon Adkins a 48 to round out the Hornets’ scoring.

Ironton plays at Gallipolis on Tuesday.
