One hurt in Chesy school bus crash

CHESAPEAKE — A car-school bus accident early Thursday morning sent one to the Cabell Huntington Hospital.

A red Chevrolet Corsica driven by Paula Collins of the Chesapeake area lost control on Big Branch Road at a curve and hit a Chesapeake school bus that was stationary waiting to make a turn, according to officials at the scene. The accident happened at approximately 7:25 a.m.

There were 18 students on the bus ranging from elementary to high school and were transferred to another bus at the scene. The bus was driven by Thomas Woods. There were no injuries reported from the driver or the children.

Three children in the Corsica declined treatment. However, Collins was taken by ambulance to Cabell Huntington Hospital, where at press time she was undergoing evaluation, according to Charles Shumaker, spokesman for the hospital.

There was extensive damage to the car.

No citations were immediately issued and the accident remains under investigation, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Dean Hunter.

The patrol, SEOEMS, Lawrence County sheriff’s office, Chesapeake fire and Chesapeake police responded to the call.
