COAL GROVE — When the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers go on the attack, opponents need a tranquilizer gun to slow them down.

Elliott County didn’t have any tranquilizers on hand Saturday as Ironton cruised to a 91-45 win over the Lady Lions in the second annual River Battle at Coal Grove High School.

“We wanted to control the tempo and we did that. We didn’t do that in our last game,” said Ironton coach Doug Graham.

“We had good ball movement and we did a good job of attacking the seams.”

Lexie Barrier led a balanced Ironton attack that saw 11 different players score. Barrier had 21 points, 10 assists, 8 steals and 3 blocked shots.

Alicia Murphy scored 14 points, Ariel Schweickart had 11 points, 5 steals and 3 assists, and Karlee McMackin scored 10 points. Macy Wise grabbed 9 rebounds for Ironton (5-1).

Sarah Smith scored 10 and Sidney Worthington 10 for Elliott County (1-6).

Barrier scored 9 points and Murphy 7 points in the first quarter as Ironton raced to a 26-13 lead.

Ironton was ahead 43-28 at the half and McMackin got 8 points in the third quarter as the Lady Tigers blitzed the Lady Lions 23-6 to open up a 66-34 lead.

Ironton hosts Coal Grove on Monday.
