PROCTORVILLE — Both teams were making shots. The Fairland Lady Dragons just made more of them.

Although Coal Grove had 19 field goals including six from the 3-point line, Fairland racked up 32 goals with five from the 3-point arc as the Lady Dragons outscored the Lady Hornets 83-51 on Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“Coal Gorve competed hard. I was impressed with them. They made some shots,” said Fairland coach Jon Buchanan.

“But we made our shots and we hurt them on the boards. They don’t have a lot of size and we took advantage of that.”

Terra Stapleton — a 6-foot-4 senior center — had a game-high 22 points and hauled down 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Dragons (7-2, 3-0).

Caitlin Stone had 14 points including three 3-pointers and Kelsey Riley scored 12 points in the Lady Dragons’ win.

Jacy Jones scored 20 points and Leah Crum — who made four 3-pointers — scored 16 points to pace the Lady Hornets (4-9 1-2).

Stapleton scored 12 points in the first quarter and Fairland took command with a 23-9 lead. Jones had six of Coal Grove’s points.

Stone scored nine points in the second quarter as the Lady Dragons blitzed Coal Grove 26-12 to open up a 49-21 halftime cushion.

Fairland outscored Coal Grove 15-12 in the third quarter and the lead was 64-33 as the Lady Dragons began to substitute.

Jones scored seven points in the fourth quarter but the Lady Hornets were still outscored 19-18.

Fairland hosts the NAPA Auto Care Classic on Saturday and visits South Point on Monday in a showdown for first place in the conference.
