Lady Dragons top Hornets

COAL GROVE — Fairland Lady Dragons’ coach Mindy Clark likes what she is seeing lately.

Fairland continued to play well as the Lady Dragons beat the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 9-2 Tuesday behind the pitching of Chandler Fulks.

“We’re playing better. We didn’t have an error,” said Clark. “Chandler pitched well. She is starting to come around after her injury. She was on top of her game.”

Fulks pitched the final six innings striking out eight and walking one to pick up the Ohio Valley Conference win.

Fairland (6-10) had 11 hits with Mollie Morris and Caitlin Stone each going 3-4. Ellen Hinshaw was 2-4 with a home run.

Fairland scored four runs in the top of the first inning.

Morris singled and scored on a throwing error. Stone and Hinshaw singled and Allison Shepherd hit a sacrifice fly. Fulks walked, Tiffani Christian was safe on an error and Nicole Wagner walked to force in a run. Morris hit into a fielder’s choice for a run.

Coal Grove cut the deficit in half with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Deanna Bentley and Kelsey Grove walked and Morgan Sties singled for a run. Bethany Webb then doubled home Grove.

In the second, Stone singled, stole second and Maddie Kazee had an RBI single and Fairland led 5-2.

The Lady Dragons scored four more runs in the sixth.

Christian doubled and scored on an overthrow. Morris singled and scored on Stone’s triple. Hanshaw capped the scoring with a two-run homer.
