COAL GROVE — There’s more to the Coal Grove Lady Hornets than just shooting.
Struggling through an off-night shooting the ball, the Lady Hornets turned to other facets of their game as they rolled past the Rose Hill Royals 58-19 on Thursday.
Coal Grove was only 25-of-81 from the field for 31 percent and 6-of-17 from the foul line for 35 percent.
However, the defense limited Rose Hill to a mere 6-of-53 shooting.
“We shot poorly from the field and we were horrible at the free throw line,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach.
“However, my girls were able to take advantage of their speed and height advantage and outrun them.”
Emily Compliment scored 15 points and Kasey Murphy had 11 points to lead a balanced offense that had eight players in the scoring column.
Destiny Dolen added 7 points and Kylie Deer chipped in 6.
“Dolen is doing a great job of passing to the open person. Compliment was able to put in her normal points. Murphy was able to get some offensive boards this game and get some put-backs,” said Roach.
“Deer and (Emileigh) Bryant have been coming off the bench and providing quality minutes. Bryant is beginning to play more aggressive, which is a plus for us.”
Coal Grove opened the game taking a commanding 19-3 first quarter lead. Compliment had 6 points, Dolen 5 and Lauren Crum and Murphy 4 each.
The lady Hornets extended the lead to 35-6 at the half with Compliment and Murphy combining for 11 points in the second quarter.
Roach substituted liberally in the third quarter with Deer getting 4 points as the lead grew to 46-13.
Natalie Fyffe had 11 points for the Lady Royals.
Coal Grove visits South Point on Monday to begin Ohio Valley Conference play.
