Ironton golfers 5th at Rowan County Invitational

MOREHEAD, Ky. — The Ironton Fighting Tigers’ golf team is proving they can play with anyone.

The Fighting Tigers showed their team skills Saturday in the large and talented 27-team field of the Rowan County Invitational at Eagle Trace Golf Course.

Besides the large team field, there were 138 golfers competing and Ironton’s Andy Holtzapfel placed seventh overall with an impressive 1-under par 71.

Josh Zornes had a solid showing with a 76 to finished tied for 18th place. Mason Weisgarber was next with a 78 to tie for 31st.

Josh Cook and Josh Mullins each carded a 79 and tied for 35th place. Jonathan Williams was tied for No. 43 with an 80. Andrew Hicks was next with an 88 to tie for 85th place.

The collective play of the team produced a team score of just 304.

West Jessamine had a 284 score to win followed by Lexington Catholic with a 286. Ashland posted a 302 and Bath County was at 303.

After Ironton at 304 was Rowan County at 308, Pikeville 313, Greenup County and Montgomery County 314, Powell County 317, Mason County 318, West Carter 321, Tates Creek 322, East Carter 323 and Russell 328.

The rest of the field had Prestonsburg 340, Rowan County II 345, Elliott County 349, Christian Academy 353, Menifee County 355, Lewis County 369, Ashland II 370, Boyd County 372, Greenup County II 375, Mason County II 376, Paintsville 379, and West Carter II 380,

With their outstanding play, Ironton is now an impressive 75-7 on the season. The Fighting Tigers play at Portsmouth Clay on Wednesday in a 4 p.m. match and in the Shawnee Invitational at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
