PROCTORVILLE — For the fifth straight year WesBanco in Proctorville will host its 9/11 tribute on Saturday.
This year the celebration will be part tribute to the military and those who serve in public safety and part community picnic.
Starting at 2 p.m. on the parking lot of the bank will be a ceremony to honor all service men and women including a flag-raising by VFW Post 6878.
“The post will present the colors,” Devinh Gibson of WesBanco, said.
Following that will be a community picnic.
“We will have games, inflatables and will be roasting a hog,” she said.
There will also be special appearances by John Buckland of Huntington, W.Va., who portrays Batman, plus actors who will be Capt. America and Batgirl.
“They will speak to the children about the real heroes in the community and what it means to be a hero,” Gibson said.
WesBanco started the celebration in 2009 to commemorate the anniversary of the attacks on four sites in the United States by Islamic terrorist groups on Sept. 11, 2001.
Four airliners were hijacked by Al-Qaeda terrorists and flown into the World Trade Center in Manhattan and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. The fourth plane was destined for the White House, but passengers thwarted that attempt. For days first responders combed the debris searching for survivors.
“It is important that the men and women in the community who serve and protect us get the credit they deserve,” Gibson said. “Our goal is to show them the appreciation they deserve.”
