BURLINGTON — Burlington Elementary fifth grade math teacher Cindy Christian, along with her students, are raising money for classmate Megan Soltz through a program with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Megan was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2010 when she was in third grade. When she relapsed in 2012, she got a bone marrow transplant.
Megan was treated at a hospital in Cincinnati, and although she wasn’t treated at St. Jude, doctors there worked closely with St. Jude to find a cure for her.
“It’s a neat program that St. Jude does,” Christian said. “Pledges and donations are raised by students who then get fun books with math problems that they have to work through depending on what is brought in.”
The students will ask family and friends for pledges that will go to helping out Megan.
“The kids are excited about it,” she said. “They love it because it’s something fun to do while knowing they are helping out their friend and classmate.”
The fundraiser will last up to Thanksgiving.
