PROCTORVILLE— Residents and guests gathered around the flagpole Tuesday afternoon at newly opened Wyngate at RiversEdge Senior Living Community.

“We’ve only been open for a month,” Rachel Sargent Bess, residence manager, said. “This is our first Veterans Day, and to honor our veterans, we decided to wait to raise the flag until now.”

There are currently six veterans who reside at Wyngate.

American Legion Post 16 out of Huntington raised the flag and the Chesapeake High School choir sang at the event.

“It means a lot when veterans are honored,” Assistant Commander of Post 16, Charlie Smoot, said. “It’s the saddest thing to see a Veterans Day come and go and not have them honored in some way.”

A Veterans Day flag-raising ceremony will be an annual event from now on at Wyngate.

“We feel like it’s an honor to have them here,” Bess said. “So it’s an honor to recognize them.”
