SOUTH POINT — A fire that broke out Thursday afternoon damaged a garage as well as the side of a nearby mobile home on Township Road 616 across from Cogan’s Wrecking Service.

The garage belongs to Cogan’s Wrecking Service owner Kenny Cogan while the mobile home belongs to Ella Dillon.

The call came in to the Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department at 12:48 p.m. Coal Grove, Upper Township and South Point volunteer fire departments assisted.

“The trailer is severely damaged and the garage is completely destroyed,” Dewey Derifield, Perry Township fire chief, said. “No one was injured.”

Firefighters said there appeared to be a working fire pit directly behind the garage, although an Ohio law states that it is illegal to openly burn between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. between the months of March and May.

“We don’t know which structure caught fire first,” Derifield said. “The exact cause of the first is still under investigation.”
